Oculus Sams, 1988
Abstract Ironicism is an artistic movement that sprang from the Larglists of the early 20th century. The movement sought to thwart the norm of titling paintings after the subject, or in accordance with the tone. In his 1954 manifesto, movement founder Berthold Knipple insisted that art not follow conventions, but instead break them through, if possible, the use of irony. The movement became very popular, itself becoming a convention, which some took as further irony.
