The Stuff of Angels, 1974

Oil, salt, and candle wax on canvas
44" x 62"

Little is known about Sergio Von Heusenhausen III, other than being the third Sergio in the Heusenhausen clan, and having been born in the Lurch district of Leviathan. There are only four extant paintings by Heusenhausen, "The Stuff of Angels" being the most notable, as it is the atmospheric quality of this encaustic work that has become highly influential. It is said that Von Heusenhausen suffered from Snarkolepsy, a sleeping sickness contracted by long-term exposure to snarkle droppings, generally afflicting stablehands and featherdressers.

Art Historian Jennifer Gulp, in her book Screwballs, Nutters, and Kooks, tells the apocryphal story of Sergio, falling into a snarkoleptic stupor, visiting a strange universe or dimension wherein the sky was a brilliant blue with patches of white, with a searing yellow-orange disc. This has been a cause for debate for years among experts, with positions ranging from Heusenhausen actually visiting such a place, to Heusenhausen fabricating the story, to Heusenhausen drinking too much lootberry stout and suffering hallucinogenic effects.
